Brevard County

The Brevard County Florida Farmers Markets are held on Thursdays and will feature a variety of produce ranging from all sorts of vegetables. Lasting from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m, for those who are interested in gardening this spring, then look no further than learning from all the Brevard County, FL farmers themselves.

Get started on spring gardening

Here is a list of some of the fresh produce that could be available at produce stands or farmers markets, like our Brevard County Farmers Markets held on Thursdays at the Wickham Park Equestrian Center from 3-6 p.m., this month; blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, cantaloupe, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, eggplant, grapefruit, honeydew, oranges, peppers, potatoes, radishes, squash, sweet corn, tomatoes and watermelon. Original News Article

Due to the debris from Hurricane Irma and the increasingly dry weather, Brevard County, FL is likely to see a surge in wildfires throughout the county. With the humidity levels being extremely low and the winds being much higher than usual, it is the perfect combination for wildfires to spread throughout the area. Firefighters are preparing for the conditions early, and are ready to go at a moment's notice.

Dry weather, Hurricane Irma debris could lead to busy wildfire season in Brevard County

So far this year, Brevard has steadily remained at high risk for wildfires because of dry weather, low humidity and sometimes blustery winds — the perfect recipe for wildfires to start and spread.

Heavy brush fires last year plagued the scrubland between Brevard and Orange counties, wreaking havoc on the landscape and people's commutes with frequent closing of main roadways. News Article

The turf in Viera Regional Park has caused quite a bit of debate on whether or not it should be kept or replaced by real grass. The argument going that real grass would cost Brevard County nearly 70,000 dollars to maintain, meanwhile a turf does not grow and doesn't need to be maintained nearly as much. As well as the fact the turf dries much faster than traditional grass, making it much more convenient for all sporting events.

Fake grass vs. real deal: AstroTurf war heats up over Viera Regional Park

So, to put youth sports and the local economy on firmer ground, the Brevard County Tourism Development Council on Wednesday moved forward with a $5 million project to convert seven natural-grass sports fields at Viera Regional Park — fields that currently cost $66,800 a year to mow and maintain — to AstroTurf. These fields are used for soccer, football and lacrosse. News Source

I-95 Shut Down Due To Fires, A Indian River County Man Stealing From Church And A Pregnant Florida Firefighter

A pregnant Indian River County firefighter has received light duty assignment in order to keep herself safe and not risk losing her pregnancy due to the rigorous labor that firefighters must do in order to successfully maintain their skills and abilities required for the job. Nicole Morris, from Sebastian Florida has pleaded relentlessly for light duty and has finally received it, with the fire department desiring to keep her unborn child safe.

Pregnant FL Firefighter Granted Light Duty Assignment

Nicole Morris, a pregnant Indian River County firefighter who has been pleading for months for light duty, has finally been given the assignment.

WPTV reports that Morris, who is now 33 weeks pregnant, began asking Indian River County Fire Chief John King to help her protect her unborn child just months into her pregnancy.

She originally did not ask for light duty but rather a chance to max out the number of shifts she could exchange with other firefighters. She had hoped to work for those firefighters early in her pregnancy so they could in turn work for her after she gave birth, but only nine of 12 shift exchanges were approved by King. A wildfire had caused I-95 to be shut down temporarily while firefighters tried to extinguish the fire in an attempt to clear out the smoke that was covering the highway. Indian River County firefighters battled with the flames from the brush fire and eventually were able to put it out, I-95 has since been reopened and is available to take for transport. A local rat removal company from Sebastian Florida assisted with the process.

I-95 Reopens in Fellsmere after being shut down due to heavy smoke from brush fire

Coyote meeting set for Wednesday night in Satellite Beach

Coyotes continue thriving beachside between the Pineda and Eau Gallie causeways, and officials warn pet owners that the relatively new predators are a permanent presence. "We've had sightings in both Indian Harbour Beach and Satellite Beach, especially around the library and Algonquin (Sports Complex) area. I think that's because there's a little more tree coverage in those areas," Satellite Beach City Manager Courtney Barker said. "We've tried, with Indian Harbour Beach, to trap these animals for some time — and we have not been successful in doing that," Barker said. "So we're at the point now where we've just realized that we have to take the advice of Florida Fish and Wildlife and educate residents to just learn how to live with them, and treat them like other predators in the area," she said. Wednesday night, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will conduct a coyote educational workshop at the Satellite Beach Civic Center, 565 Cassia Blvd. The public meeting starts at 6 p.m. Article Source On Coyotes In Satellite Beach, FL

Florida Bat Found With Rabies

Brevard and Indian River County are home to thirteen (13) species of bats that are either year round, or seasonal residents. All thirteen species of Florida bats are insectivorous (meaning they eat mosquitoes and other insects). Bat removal is a large task due to the amount of bats in Florida.

Some bats form colonies and some roost alone. There are also seven species of bats that have, on occasion, been found in Florida but they do not normally live here. These are referred to as accidental species. Three are from more northern climates and also eat insects. Four are from more tropical regions and feed on nectar, pollen and fruit. The latter have only been found in south Florida and the Florida Keys..

Rabid bat discovered in Florida, 10th person exposed to rabies. An animal with rabies could infect other wild animals or domestic animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies. All domestic animals should be vaccinated against rabies and all wildlife contact should be avoided, particularly raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes. Rabies is a disease of the nervous system and is fatal to warm blooded animals and humans. The only treatment for human exposure to rabies is rabies-specific immune globulin and rabies immunization. Appropriate treatment that is started soon after the exposure will protect an exposed person from the disease. Original Source On Rabid Florida Bats

Coyotes roaming south into Indialantic, Melbourne Beach

Picture of trapped raccoonMelbourne, FL is a rich Floridian city, the second largest municipality in its county. This city is very interesting and rich in both its history and its attractions, drawing in a large number of people thanks to its stunning backdrop and wealth of activities. Approximately halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, Melbourne wildlife control is extremely important in Florida. The peninsula upon which Florida lies has a very intriguing prehistoric story, and Melbourne itself is steeped in fascinating history. Mammoth bones have been discovered here, along with evidence for the settlement of Paleo-Indian peoples, including artefacts and spear points. Later in its history, the area was discovered by pioneer families. In fact, Melbourne itself was founded by former slaves in the 1860s.

The good news: Indian Harbour Beach's licensed trapper has suspended his coyote-catching campaign because eyewitness sightings have dropped off at Gleason Park and the Algonquin Sports Complex. The bad news: Some of these coyotes have apparently migrated down Brevard County's barrier island into Indialantic — where they are preying on feral cats near Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and points southward. Leo Cross, the trapper tasked with trying to capture Indian Harbour Beach coyotes, said he is now receiving reports of the elusive predators ranging from Cocoa Beach southward to Melbourne Beach and the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. "That's to be expected. Bobcats, coyotes, you name it — the beach is like a highway for 'em," Cross said. "They're going to move on when their food source is running low. It almost seems like they've moved to that church area because there's more cats there," he said. Coyotes in Melbourne Florida
